PET FIRST AID
New This Spring: Pet First Aid (Dog and Cat), Dog First Aid, Cat First Aid

The American Red Cross is offering Pet First aid classes for pet owners of cats and dogs.
Upon completion of this course the participants will be able to:

  • Know how to check a cat or dog that appears to be having a first aid emergency
  • Check an unconscious cat or dog for breathing and cardiac emergencies.
  • Provide basic wound care and control bleeding for a cat or dog.
  • Care for a cat or dog involved in a car accident
  • Put together your pets First Aid kit
Fees: Pet First Aid - $50; Dog First Aid - $40; Cat First Aid $40

All classes will be held at the Chapter House, 911 Stowell St.

BABYSITTERS TRAINING

This training provides critical information to teach young persons the responsibilities and qualities of being a good babysitter and what to expect from the person who hires you.  It teaches participants the best ways to be safe and keep the children in their care safe.  Training is limited to young persons from 11 to 15 years old.  Fee is $35.00 per person. Learn-to-Swim Program

Our Learn-to-Swim Program is for children (and adults) of all ages and abilities. We have programs at Southside High School, Waverly High School and Odessa-Montour High School Pools. Please call Jessica at 734-3317 for more information.

Fees for 5 & Up Lessons:

Fees:  $40 per child, 2 children - $60, 3 children - $90, 4 children - $100

Pre-school lessons:     3 to 5 years of age      $30 per child

Assistance can be obtained for individuals who qualify for free or reduced lunch programs.

We also offer Joint Venture, HydroFit, Water Babies, and Prenatal classes.

LIFEGUARD TRAINING

Prerequisites: 15 years of age or older, able to swim 300 yards non-stop using breaststroke and freestyle with rhythmic breathing, surface dive and brick retrieval

Registration with $135 payment

CLASS DATES:  - June 12, 16 - 20, 23, 25, 26    Attendance at all sessions is mandatory

Time:  6:00p.m. - 10:00p.m. ;  Wednesdays from 7:00p.m. - 10:00.m.

Class is held at the Elmira YWCA  with the exception of the 17th & 20th which are at the

Red Cross Chapter House.

WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR COURSE

Candidates must be at least 16 years old to participate but do not need to be a lifeguard.  Maturity and responsibility must be demonstrated throughout the course.

Registration with $150 payment.

Location:  Southside High School

Dates:  June 27th, July 1 - 3

Time:  9:00a.m. - 4:00p.m.   Attendance at all sessions is mandatory

LIFEGUARD INSTRUCTOR COURSE

We will be offering a lifeguard instructor course for those interested in training others to become lifeguards.      

  Attendance at all sessions is required

Cost: $135 (includes instructor manual)

Participants must be able to pass the pre-course skills.

Summer Aquatics Camp

Elmira Camp:  July 7-19;  noon - 3:00p.m. Classes offered include:  WSI, Lifeguarding, Waterfront Lifeguarding, Lifeguard Management and Guard Start.  Class will be held at Southside High School.

Lay Responder FA/CPR/AED Instructor Course

This course is for those interested in teaching for their place of employment or as volunteers for the American Red Cross. It will certify instructors to teach Adult, Child, and Infant CPR, First Aid and AED (Automated External Defibrillator).  All sessions are mandatory and held at the Red Cross Chapter House.

Dates: Weds. April 30:  8:30a.m. - 4:30p.m., May 5, 7, 12, 14: 6:00pm - 10:00pm

Cost: $140

A  free series of workshops for Primary Caregivers.  (All others are welcome - fee is $8 per session). Sponsored by the Chemung County Office for the Aging.
